Is Your Marketing Plan Festive or in a Funk?

My Facebook feed has become full of photos from friends showing off their decorated Christmas trees. My neighbors have their outdoor Christmas lights on. Black Friday sales have already started.

My first response was WHAT?!?

I’m a firm believer that the holidays don’t officially begin until after Thanksgiving, so I was initially annoyed by all of this.

But, when I talked to one of my neighbors and read some of the Facebook posts, I learned the motivation for the seemingly early start of the holiday season: People are seeking joy. Plain and simple.

After eight months of lockdowns, quarantine, business closures, event cancellations, school disruptions and election news, they are eagerly trying to jumpstart the magic of the holiday season.

After giving this some thought, I realized two things:
1. Who am I to judge or argue?
2. The same philosophy can be applied to your marketing program. Are you being proactive or reactive? Are you trying to make things happen or have you given up?

WHICH TYPE OF MARKETER ARE YOU?

🔸 Buddy the Elf

There is no movie character more full of Christmas spirit and determined to spread holiday cheer than Buddy the Elf (played by Will Ferrell). He has a unique outlook on life that emphasizes all that is best in the world and cannot be deterred from his mission to find his family, despite obstacles.

Are you looking for new ways to market your business? Are you determined to succeed no matter what? Are you helping others in your community?

🔸 The Grinch

Known as the grumpy, mean-spirited, anti-holiday character in “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” the term refers in general to someone with a coarse, greedy attitude. He lives alone and plots to ruin the holidays for residents of Whoville; but, fortunately, the story has a happy ending.

Have you slashed your marketing budget to shreds? Are you unwilling to try something different? Are you “closing up shop” until things change?

Regardless of where you stand on this issue, the holidays are coming and 2021 is right behind them. None of us can change that, but how you choose to approach your marketing will ultimately tell the tale.
